  1. that’s a great list…most of that is software i use on Linux (i’m linux only now), i only have a few changes/suggestions for you…change from Picasa to F-Spot (unless you need the google integration), F-Spot is more designed for Linux and i think it’s very well done and quite a bit iPhoto-like. My second reccomendation is change Firefox to Swiftfox…Swiftfox is basically firefox, but you can download a .deb sort of tailored to your system so it makes thing a bit faster. And finally K3b is AWESOME.

  2. Well, there are many, many alternatives for things, it would quickly take up the whole page ;) , but just a couple for starters, don’t forget Koffice, I really like kword, I don’t really have any need for a full office sweet so I don’t really know about the rest of koffice, but I like kword.

Media Players, Amarok is my personal fav, it has built in support for ipod etc. For video VLC is a good choice, as is mplayer, kmplayer, kaffeine, xine, Totem. You would need to get some codecs etc to cover most formats, and libdvdcss for DVD playback.

Instant messaging, you could also try kopete.

CD/DVD burning, I use K3B, it was the first (and last) I tried, for me there was no need to try anything else. Not saying there aren’t others which are as good/better, but it satisfied my needs nicely.

  3. Microsoft Excel – Openoffice.org Calc (Math is a formula editor)

  4. Looks like it may be the start of a nice list. Don’t forget, if you use a .rpm based distro, it is possible to get lightscribe to work easily. If you are using a .deb based linux, it is possible, but is a lot harder to get to work, i wrote a nice tutorial for it.

  5. Oh, and instead of Rhythombox, look into amarok.
amarok=best music player for any system!

  6. Gnumeric is closer to Excel than Calc is since it will handle VBA Macros just fine.

  7. Oh, for a music player, I’d add Banshee. I really like that one for podcasts, streaming radio. last.fm, and of course music cataloging/playing. Beep Media Player (BMP) is another WMP alternative.

For CD/DVD burning, I’m a fan of Gnomebaker. I like my apps to blend in well with my DE, so the GTK-based Gnomebaker fits better on my GNOME desktop than the Qt-based K3B.

Other email client: Evolution (but I use webmail instead)

Opera is also available on Linux to replace IE.

I think NVU’s now gone or dead or something. The Seamonkey Suite (new version of Mozilla Suite) has an HTML editor (yes, WYSIWYG).

  8. I’d also consider Evolution as an email client. I’d add Dia as a Visio alternative
